Just My Son and Me

27 May

Being a single parent is one of the toughest jobs in the world, because I have to play the role of both the mother and the father. My wife passed away many years ago, and I had to raise our son on my own. It’s more of a learning process for the both of us. My son has to cope with his mother not being there, and so do I. Recently we had to move, so I searched for 2 bedroom apartments for Las Vegas. My son didn’t want to move because all of his friends would be gone.

I understand the difficulty my son was facing. When I was his age, my family had to move, and I thought I would never see my friends again. This was before the days when computers were as prevalent and people didn’t have their own email addresses and video chats to send messages. When we wanted to communicate with someone who was miles away, we got out a pencil and a sheet of paper and wrote them a letter. We had to pick out the right words to say in the letter the firs time, because there was no way we could change it or take it back.

As much as my son like the new apartment we moved into, he still felt sad about leaving everyone. A couple of days after we moved to Vegas, my son met one of the local kids. She was a young girl, the same age as him, and I think he instantly became infatuated with her. He starts to act differently when he is around her. I shouldn’t laugh, because I was the same way when I met his mother, but it still looks funny to me. He’s not so depressed about moving when she is around.
