When I arrived in Buenos Aires, I really didn’t know anything about the sport of polo! I had friends who dabbled in the sport back home in England, but I had never taken much interest in the sport. I knew that Argentina was supposed to be the best place for polo, with the top players and most prestigious tournaments. However I didn’t really have much of an urge to follow like an avid fan.
However once I was settled in my top luxury apartment in Buenos Aires and started to make friends, it seemed as if going to the Open polo tournament was something not to be missed. I was told that even if you are not into the sport, that these players were the best in the world and that even if horses were not your thing that you would still be able to appreciate the hard work that the players have put in to get to where they are today. Most of the players had a handicap of 10 (out of 10) and were at the top of their game so anyone who has an interest in sport should be able to enjoy that opportunity. I was also told that this was the best polo that you could ever watch – so I decided that if I wasn’t going to watch it here, where would I?
I went to my first match and was pleasantly surprised as to how much I enjoyed myself. The atmosphere was great and we bought a great picnic and had some drinks. It was a sunny day and I felt very relaxed. Although I was not 100% sure on the rules, I could appreciate how good these players were. They were so fast and so in control, the horse and player at one together. They would stretch so far out their saddle to hit shots and the control and power they had was overwhelming. After a few chuckers had passed I went to get myself an ice cream and drink and enjoyed it in the sun – I couldn’t believe I was not going to come to the polo. I had already been taught all about the players and the tournament and couldn’t wait to follow it more intently. After the game has finished there were some great after parties at the bars too all in all it was such a great day out from my luxury apartment and I was already excited about next week matches – Ellestrina to WIN!
